Found in moist, shady woods north along coast. Grows from short, stout, fleshy rhizomes; height 6 to 20 inches.

The open white to pink flowers have short oval petals and are on a long pedicel above three oval, sharp pointed green leaves. Fruit forms oval, green, berry-like capsules with wing-like ridges.
