Boykin Creek
Summary:
Boykin Creek is a tributary of the North Fork Nehalem
River located due
east of
Oswald West State Park but just to the west of Highway
53. The
stream is
approximately 2.35 miles long and supports Chinook and
coho salmon as
well as
steelhead and cutthroat trout. Boykin
Creek lacks
adequate
pool habitat, riparian cover, in-stream channel
complexity, and has
multiple
locations where invasive plant species are the dominant
streamside
vegetation
type. Boykin Creek also contains two barriers to
fish
migration--a
culvert blocking available tributary habitat, and a
collapsed log
stringer
bridge on the upper mainstem. This project entails
adding 100 key
pieces
of large wood to Boykin Creek coupled with planting
3,000 mixed
conifers,
several loads of willow starters, and treating 1 acre of
non-native
plants for
removal. The culvert blocking access to the
tributary habitat
will be
replaced with one that is fish-passable, and the
upstream mainstem
barrier will
be removed. Monitoring will be conducted through
the combined
efforts of
Boswell Consultants and ODFW.
