Scarborough Fair Trad. Arr. Johnstone.
This rather starkly arranged version perhaps restores the song closer to its ancient
original, rather ironic intent. Scarborough is a harbour town on the Yorkshire coast
and close enough in cultural base to the English Border counties of Cumberland and
Northumberland to merit inclusion in this recording.
Are you going to Scarborough Fair (Response:"Parsley, Sage, Roisemary and Thyme")
Remember me to one who lives there (Response:"She once was a true love o' mine")
Tell her to make me a Cambric Shirt (Resp.)
Without any seam or needlework. (Resp:"Then she'll be a true love o' mine")
Tell her to sew it wi' a sickle o' leather; (Resp.)
Then cover it ower wi' a Peacock's feather, (Resp.)
Tell her to wash it in yonder dry well (Resp.)
Where water ne'er sprung, nor drop o' rain fell. (Resp.)
And when you've done and finished y'r work, (Resp.)
Then come tae me for y'r Cambric shirt (Resp:"Oh never be a true love o' mine")
Repeat V.1 (Resp:"Oh never be a true love o' mine")
